Many three-row SUVs are big enough that, after driving mid-size cars and SUVs, driving them requires real adjustment. Still, the 2023 Kia Sorento drives a needle, like a two-row SUV with seating for up to seven.
The Kia Sorento brought us the all-new 2021 Sorento, so it didn’t need to reinvent it for 2023. But with a year of customer feedback on the sleek new design, Kia added some convenience features and reconfigured body levels to match what buyers tend to demand.
They’ve also expanded their list of advanced driver assistance systems, which now includes blind spot collision avoidance, rear cross-traffic collision avoidance, and safe exit assist.
New driver assistance
Advanced driver assistance features have made their way from luxury to more common vehicles in recent years. But they are not all the same.
Kia’s Drive Wise suite of advanced driver-assistance features garnered strong reviews last year when it included highway lane assist, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and more.
For the 2023 model year, Kia has expanded it to include several new safety features, most of which come standard at no additional charge.
Blind spot collision avoidance alerts can alert you to cross traffic in hard-to-see spots and even apply the brakes to help avoid a collision. An available blind spot display also displays a direct feed of blind spots into the instrument panel.
New Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance technology can alert the driver of obstructions behind the vehicle while in reverse and even brake to avoid crossing traffic.
Safe Exit Assist uses the same sensors to prevent you from accidentally opening the door in cross-traffic. Works for front and back doors and will activate child locks if needed to prevent an accident.
New livable amenities
Kia’s designers have added thoughtful touches that make the Sorento easy to live with every day.
Cheap 2023 S models come with a standard wireless phone charging pad located in the center console.
All Edges also have a standard 115V power inverter that can charge household items such as laptops.
Retractable rear door covers are now standard equipment – a convenience in a car often used by families.
Two types of hybrid
Sorento shoppers may also want to consider Kia’s two Sorento Hybrid models.
Hybrid cars used to mean compromises to increase fuel economy. In 2023, that is no longer true. The standard Sorento uses a 191-hp four-cylinder engine that’s good for 24 mpg city and 29 highway (with a slight penalty if you add all-wheel drive). The 2023 Kia Sorento Hybrid is more fuel efficient (39 city and 35 highway). But it’s also slippery, with 227 horsepower.
The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model may appeal to those considering purchasing an electric vehicle. It can travel up to 32 miles on electric power alone before its gasoline engine kicks in. For most families, that means they work just as well as electric cars around town. But you can take road trips in the Sorento PHEV without worrying about range with the petrol engine. With 261 horsepower, it’s almost the fastest Sorento out there.
roughly? A 281-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder is available on EX, SX, SX Prestige, and SX Prestige X-Line models.
