Research Issue
The category of diagnostics, socioeconomic level, timing of assessments, and ethnic groups may all be risk factors for psychiatric readmission. This study will determine how much the socioeconomic status of patients affects their likelihood of being readmitted for mental treatment.
Issue Statement
A diagnosable mental health issue affects 25% of Americans, with 60% of those disorders being classified as moderate to severe (Morris, Ghose, Williams, Brown., & Khan, 2018). In fact, by the year 2020, psychiatric diseases are predicted to rank as the second leading cause of disability worldwide. Due to an increase in the number of patients in need of medical attention, healthcare infrastructure decreased the amount of long- and short-term psychiatry services that were offered based on this statistic (Morris et al., 2018). The length of inpatient stays were cut back, which increased the number of readmissions. For instance, it was found that 12% of all psychiatry patients were readmitted between September 2015 and August 2016. (Morris et al., 2017). Additionally, statistics indicate that 15% of Medicare beneficiaries who were released from medical institutions in 2011 were readmitted within 30 days (Lorine et al., 2015).
Past studies have emphasized risk factors connected to psychiatric readmission. These elements, however, differ in terms of ethnic groupings, socioeconomic level, timing of assessments, and even the type of diagnostics. The presence of a diagnosis of schizophrenia, more severe symptoms, self-care impairment, usage of restraints while hospitalized, prior hospitalizations, alcohol intoxication, and the potential to endanger others at the time of initial admission were some of the common characteristics seen across these variations (Lorine et al., 2015). It is clear that readmission of patients has an impact on the psychiatric patient’s quality of life. Therefore, researching factors linked to readmission may enhance management initiatives. As a result, this study will attempt to determine how much patients’ socioeconomic factors affect their likelihood of being readmitted as mental patients.
Research Issue
How much do the socioeconomic features of the patients affect the readmission of mental patients?
Research Approach
Since the study will concentrate on precise measurements and perform a numerical analysis of the data gathered, which will ultimately be generalized across additional patient groups, the study presents quantitative research.
