Quality and Safety Outcomes in Health Care
Discussion
Summary of Findings
A quick review was conducted to identify some of the most efficient instructional approaches that can encourage critical thinking in undergraduate nursing students. Previous studies have shown that critical thinking helps to improve the quality and safety of healthcare results. Numerous systematic reviews address educational strategies to foster critical thinking in nursing. The selected systematic reviews and a meta-analysis that contains pertinent data relating to the topic served as the foundation for the current quick evaluation. The interventions are divided into four categories in the discussion of the outcomes: problem-based and evidence-based techniques, instructional tactics, and student-centered strategies.
Technology-Based Approaches
The evaluated systematic reviews and the meta-analysis examined the effectiveness of technology-based solutions in acquiring CT skills. Only two interventions, the interactive videodisc system and the interactive videodisc system, successfully enhanced critical thinking. According to Carter, Creedy, and Sidebotham’s 2016 evaluation, interactive videodisc systems are effective at fostering the development of CT skills in nursing education. The effectiveness of the interactive videodisc system was evaluated using the CCTDI technique (Carter, Creedy & Sidebotham, 2016). Other technological interventions could have been more successful.
Evidence-based and problem-based approaches
The main topics of the systematic reviews and meta-analyses were the problem and evidence-based interventions that foster critical thinking in nursing students. When utilized in isolation, the PBL technique is effective in the classroom (Carter, Creedy, & Sidebotham, 2016; Carvalho et al., 2017; Oliveira, D., Carbogim, Rodrigues & Püschel, 2016). However, because the effect on CT was more significant, it was used in conjunction with CM (Carter, Creedy & Sidebotham, 2016; Carvalho et al., 2017). Additionally, the approach could be used with online education to advance CT abilities (Oliveira, Dáz, Carbogim, Rodrigues & Püschel, 2016). According to Carter, Creedy, and Sidebotham’s (2016) research, nursing students can improve their critical thinking skills by taking evidence-based courses.
